BILTON CONTEMPORARY ART: FINE FURNITURE MEETS FINE ART

Jim and Steve Coffey
DECEMBER 4 TO JANUARY 2, 2010
Opening Reception: December 5, 2 to 4pm

Fine Furniture Meets Fine Art in this stunning exhibit from two brothers, Jim and Steve Coffey, at bilton contemporary art from December 4, 2009 to January 2, 2010.

Two artists in the same family, one paints, one produces fine furniture – but where do the two meet? In their collaborative pieces, both Jim and Steve strive for the best possible meeting of two worlds. In Jim’s finely crafted furniture, Steve has added his paintings to make truly unique one-of-the kind furniture.

“Then there is the collaborative effort with my brother, Steve. We came up with the idea of framing his exceptional oil works with furniture a few years back and this design element adds visual interest to both the paintings and the furniture” Jim Coffey, November 2009.

Jim had been producing fine furniture since the early 1980’s first as a hobby, but later as part of his normal working life. His furniture has clean lines and uses some exotic woods in their fabrication. It is not unheard of that he collaborates with others for designs and finishes.  His love of wood is evident in the finely crafted furniture he produces out of his workshop in Innisfail, Alberta. He is completely self-taught, although through the books he has read, he feels that he has learned much from the masters, both past and present, who were willing to share their art through the written word.  The highest quality materials and craftsmanship goes into every piece he produces and he warranties each for his lifetime!

Steve is a well known Singer/Songwriter and of course, painter. Steve received his initial art training at Red Deer College from 1983 to 1985 and went on to get his Masters Degree in Fine Arts in 1990 from the University of Regina. His work is elemental with a focus on nature and the forces with which humanity has to contend. He searches for a distinctive atmosphere from the immensity and grandeur of the plains to the human mark etched upon it. He draws from his past and the present; in a process he calls “Memory Polaroid’s” to produce works of expressive light and movement. Once you have seen his work, the iconic images of trains, prairies and wash-day lines are etched upon our collective memory. His wide-ranging skies and lonely prairies reverberate with movement and capture the prairie landscape perfectly.

Please join us for this exceptional exhibit where fine furniture and fine art show us how the meeting of two brothers can enhance the world around us.
