Hamlet Shut Up is Full of Fringe-y Goodness

Saturday night took us to LaMama to check out HAMLET SHUT UP – a fun and funny adaptation of HAMLET, but without all the pesky dialogue. It is probably the only Fringe show we’re going to see this year and it is well worth the trip. Ably performed by a cast of L.A.-based actors, director Jonas Oppenheim pulls no punches in this over-the-top slapstick rendition of Shakespeare’s classic play. Broadly comic and full of silly sight gags, the show follows the plot of the original faithfully, unspooling the drama through mimed (and occasionally grunted) vignettes.

HAMLET SHUT UP is classic “fringe” theater – very DIY and seat of the pants, irreverent and loose. The acting is broad and high-energy and the show pretty much races through HAMLET at full speed. And yes, there is a shark. Almost hidden in all the hi-jinks and madcap mishegos is a beautiful little puppet show put on by the now-mad Ophelia, where she enacts her drowning. This moment hints at the tragic dimensions of the play and suggests that there is more here than just full-throttle comedy.

I find the Fringe to be generally overwhelming and usually I get frustrated by all the silly schtick, but HAMLET SHUT UP is clever and fun and Fringe at its messy best.

Expressive Life on ArtsJournal

Over on ArtsJournal there’s a real highbrow conversation by celebrity arts admin bloggers.  Here’s the basic premise:

Are the terms “Art” and “Culture” tough enough to frame a public policy carve-out for the 21st century? Are the old familiar words, weighted with multiple meanings and unhelpful preconceptions, simply no longer useful in analysis or advocacy? In his book, Arts, Inc., Bill Ivey advances “Expressive Life” as a new, expanded policy arena – a frame sufficiently robust to stand proudly beside “Work Life,” “Family Life,” “Education,” and “The Environment.” Is Ivey on the right track, or is “Expressive Life” a dead end? Can we define what’s in and out, use “Expressive Life” to argue the value of heritage and artistic engagement, or should we just pump fresh oxygen into the old talking points? Is Ivey the Pied Piper, Don Quixote, or cultural policy’s rendition of Bernie Madoff? Beginning Monday, fifteen of the smartest thinkers on art and society will put Expressive Life through the wringer. May the public interest win!

Hunter Blue at Mimi’s

If you want a taste of old, weird NYC you need to hightail it up to Mimi’s restaurant on 2nd ave b/w 52nd and 53rd st. to check out Hunter Blue a/k/a Chicken Delicious.

Mimi’s is a madcap and always lively restaurant and bar that just exudes warmth and welcome. There’s always a strange mix of regulars and tourists of all shapes and sizes and most nights there’s Hunter Blue – the self-described “piano player, singer, spiritual adviser and bizarre entertainer extraordinaire.”  He kind of defies description – check out the video:

His repertoire is vast and he always has time to take requests. You never know when some banker-looking type will surprise you with a moody and moving rendition of “Blue Moon”. And for those of you boozy chanteuse-y types, you will be sure to savor your time in the spotlight amongst “friends you haven’t met yet”.

So put on your drinking hat and and your best singing outfit and I’ll see you at Mimi’s!
